His
day job, and entry into the world of fashion, was as a packer in
a womenswear wholesaler in Margaret Street. After another year dedicated
to music (once even playing drums for Tom Jones) Peter Werth decided
to follow his nose for fashion, and took a job in menswear sales
in Smart and Weston’s store in Regents Street.
Peter continued to work in menswear through the
early 1970s when he joined John Craig ladieswear to launch their
first menswear collection, and was voted onto the board of directors.
He left in 1975 to set up on his own. Peter Werth’s advertising
slogan “Try half as hard, look twice as good” sums up
the laid back philosophy of the brand, whilst the brand’s
radical advertising campaigns have brought humour and interest to
the men’s fashion market.
Peter Werth lives in North London with his family.
He remains interested in music and continues to give his flair and
personality to the clothing label that bears his name. Commented
Peter on sponsoring the Young Drummer competition:
"Jazz drumming in particular has played
an important role in my life since the age of 16. I hope to be
playing for many more years and welcome this opportunity to associate
myself with the new young breed of today's up and coming drummers".
